Sex is a tough one to define, given that everyone has his or her own definition, but here goes. Since sex is so many different things, I’m going to just make a list with a bunch of possible definitions, in no particular order:
1. Sex is an expression of love.
2. Sex is the rubbing of genitals against another person’s genitals.
3. Sex is rubbing your own genitals with fingers, vibrators, the leg of a chair, your favourite stuffed animal, your pillow, an old copy of a John Grisham novel, a back massager, etc.
4. Sex is when two people get together and lick each other.
5. Sex is when three or more people get together and lick each other.
6. Sex is when two people get together and lick each other while another person watches. Sometimes that third person is touching themselves, sometimes not.
7. Sex can result in procreation, when a penis is thrusting inside a vagina and orgasms, shooting sperm into the women’s vagina, which may or may not meet with an egg.
8. Sex is the process of combining and mixing genetic traits, often resulting in the specialization of organisms into a male or female variety.
9. Sex is super hot.
10. Sex involves these extra awesome things called orgasms, which are the result of directly stimulating the genitals (though some can have orgasms without direct stimulation) and the thousands of nerves that are on those genitals until a wave of pleasure fills the body.
11. Sex brings people together and creates an intimate physical and emotional landscape to be explored.
12. Sex involves naked bodies rubbing up against each other for the specific purpose of pleasuring each other.
13. People often refer to the following three sex acts as ‘sex’: Vagina intercourse (penis in vagina or vibe intercourse, or vaginal penetration), oral sex (licking and tonguing your partner’s genitals…blow jobs, eating pussy, etc), and anal intercourse (penis or vibe in anus, or anal penetration). These definitions are helpful because these sex acts are definitely common for many people, but this does leave out the fluidity and complexity of sexual expression and experience.
14. Sex is the physical act that results in biological reproduction.
15. Sex is the result of our innate human desire to connect with one another and to mate. We have biological responses to certain people that come in the form of physical and sexual attraction. This allows us to continue propagating the human race, but more importantly, it allows us to make our lives meaningful through intimate connection.
None of these definitions work alone. If you took one as the ultimate definition of sex you would be doing two things. First, you’d be dismissing and diminishing another person’s sexual experience, and second, you’d be making the claim that sex is something that is fixed, that doesn’t evolve with society, which is completely untrue. Sex and sexuality is ever evolving and constantly changing as we are challenged with our own sexual hang-ups and societal pressures and morals.
