Originally, a derogatory synonym for homosexual, from the notion that being homosexual is strange. The term has since been reclaimed by the LGBT community where it has multiple layers of meaning, but it generally refers to anyone who isn’t strictly heterosexual. Use of the term is still controversial for some in the LGBT community because it continues to be used outside the community as an insult.
