Machismo is a word of Spanish and Portuguese origin that describes excessive and often stereotypical masculinity. Machismo ranges from a personal sense of virility to a more extreme male chauvinism. The characteristics include bravado, domineering, fierceness, toughness, and a gruff and gritty sense of self.
Machismo is a funny thing. I am kind of attracted to it in men, and then feel a sense of it when I’m with women. I have no desire to be with someone who is sexist or misogynistic, but sometimes the toughness, the bravado is oddly appealing to me. Perhaps it comes from the desire to feel safe in this weird world where one wants to feel protected. At the same time, I am pretty hard-core into being independent and taking care of myself and also taking care of the person I’m with. I seem to be attracted to those who are a little rough around the edges, so to speak.
Does machismo have a true purpose in our culture or does it simply propel old school gender norms and stereotypes that hurt us in the end? I suppose if there are people who are attracted to that particular masculine characteristic (and many people are), then there is a place for it after all. Perhaps nothing would really get accomplished if there wasn’t a bit of machismo happening.
Here’s a list of the top five machismo men in Hollywood (in my opinion):
a. Bruce Willis: I’ve had a crush on this dude since I was a kid and he was in Moonlighting. He was awesome in that movie where he plays a mobster hit man, and he rocked as himself in Ocean’s 12.
b. George Clooney: Clooney is a guy’s guy but also a lady’s guy. He’s gorgeous and kinda knows it but doesn’t flaunt it.
c. Donald Faison: Otherwise known as ‘Chris Turk’ on the comedy-drama Scrubs. Chris Turk totally has machismo and is with hot Dominican nurse Carla Espinosa.
d. Freddy Rodriguez: Otherwise known as Federico Diaz, or ‘Rico’ on the most amazing TV drama of all time, HBO’s Six Feet Under.
e. Mark Ruffalo: I’m in love with this man. He is the hottest scruffiest most awesome man on the planet. I have permission from my lifetime partner to do Mark Ruffalo if the opportunity ever arises. Even without that permission, I’m not sure I could consider it cheating, given that I feel like Mark and I are destine to make babies together at some point in our lives.
1. My man has mad machismo. I think it’s super hot. Sometimes when we go to the gay bar with our friends he give out that hot macho vibe like he isn’t looking for any new dick, but I know he’s on the prowl and I love watching him hard at work. He does a good job of pulling off that tough and gritty masculinity, but when it comes down to it, he’s a massive puddle of manly goo.
2. I love a hot machismo man. Someone who can spank my ass and give it to me hard, but also someone who can protect me when we’re out together.
