May is International Masturbation Month. First celebrated in 1995 and was created by sex toy retailer Good Vibrations. The company created the annual event after Clinton appointed Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was

fired for making statements in support of masturbation for sexual health purposes. Originally intended to only be for one day but now celebrated for the entire month.

Good Vibrations also created a  Masturbation Hall-Of-Fame that has such people as Jamie Lee Curtis, Anne Heche, Madonna, Howard Stern and many other sex-positive celebrities, activists and educators who have supported masturbation.

There is also an event during the month called the Masturbate-A-Thon that has been happening since 1998. Participants ask people to pledge money for each minute that they are able to continuously masturbate. The event has happened in a few different places around the world, the original one being based in San Francisco.
