Porn eBooks Depicting Rape And Incest Force Website Closure
The popularity in eBooks and the growing online community of self publishers have created a fresh online industry promoting new authors, unique story ideas, and a booming online market place, but a select group of publishers have broken the policies of acceptable content by publishing stories depicting violent sex, incest and zoophilia which could be found alongside children’s novels on the websites of major online distributors.
HWSmith, a british storefront and online retailer of literature immediately shut down their website when they discovered that a search of the word “daddy” brought results showing explicit bondage tales alongside children’s stories, and released a statement on the matter.
“Last week we were made aware that a number of unacceptable titles were appearing on our website through the Kobo website that has an automated feed to ours. This is an industry wide issue impacting retailers that sell self-published eBooks due to the explosion of self-publishing, which in the main is good as it gives new authors the opportunity to get their content published. However we are disgusted by these particular titles, find this unacceptable and we in no way whatsoever condone them.”
After, Kobo, a Toronto, Canada based company who distributes the eBooks to 3rd party online retailers were forced to make a statement themselves.
“As you may be aware, there has been a significant amount of negative attention in the UK regarding offensive material that became available across a number of eBook platforms. Kobo is taking immediate action to resolve this issue which is a direct result of a select few authors and publishers violating Kobo’s content policies.”
The out lash at the companies comes after news was made public that “Dinosaur Erotica” could be found at online retailers, which led to many investigating what other taboo tales could be found for sale within sites like Amazon and WHSMith.
The popularity of eBooks and eBook reading devices has steadily climbed since Kobo’s launch in 2009, with sales climbing sevenfold for the 2011 holiday shopping season, boosted by the release of the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey earlier that year. Fifty Shades has sold 70 Million copies globally since it’s release. It’s popularity and success has created authors who are attempting to imitate it’s shock and taboo nature which has led to the influx of these type of self publications.
