He apparently attacked three people with a machete, wounding two and killing one. Authorities have not yet released information on the deceased victim. Seven people were at the offices when the attack happened. Steve worked as a web designer and part time adult film actor. On the night of the attack he learned that he may lose his job and be evicted from the premises, where he worked and also lived. He appeared in 12 titles.

Even creepier, porn actress Dana DeArmond remarked on her Twitter feed “omg i thought of steve driver when they said it was a skinny black guy with a sword. I knew he wasn’t right in the head.”

The LAPD is investigating the attack as a case of workplace violence. The suspect fled in a blue Toyota RAV4 with the license plate 5YTC423.

[UPDATE] The victim was Elegant Angel veteran Herbert Wong, stage name: Tom Dong.

[UPDATE] According to a source that visited the two other victims in the hospital, one of the victim’s hands was slashed so severely he is in danger of having it amputated. This source also said that Dong was stabbed three times in the back and didn’t die immediately. The Ultima DVD office has been the site of industry violence before. UFC fighter turned porn performer War Machine was involved in an altercation involving numerous adult industry members late last year.

[UPDATE} The LAPD has indicated that this is the 5th homicide in the area this year.

[UPDATE] Driver was allegedly fired because his bosses “weren’t happy with his product.” He also has a history of violence. Driver is currently on probation for a weapon violation in 2008 and allegedly threatened to kill one of his college professors if he didn’t give him an A. According to the Washington Post, he told an instructor at the University of Maryland he was, “a mobster and would dismember the instructor’s body if he didn’t get the grade.”

I’d like to suggest asking “Little Miss Aka” on his MySpace page who offers “…I’ll listen to your side of the story.” But he should definitely stay away from “Kannin Chen” who writes “You killed Tom? Fuck you Steve…fuck you…”

Following in a very interesting trend, after Deep Throat and Neu Wave Hookers’ “re-imagining / reboots,” this is a great addition to Vivid’s unbeatable library of filth and fun.

The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Standards (CalOSHA) met today to discuss the call for an advisory committee on condoms within the adult film industry. In a nutshell CalOSHA is calling for mandatory condoms in all future porn productions. The FSC isn’t necessarily arguing against the condom use, they’re just trying to give everyone outside full disclosure of it’s maintained practices and procedure.

But it got me thinking. Almost every time I see a guy wearing a condom, and really it depends on whether i’ve seen condoms in the other sex scenes, I think to myself “I wonder what came up on her monthly report.”

Yeah it’s kind of mean.

But it’s a scary world. Now that it’s no longer the 70′s we actually have diseases out there that, not only can’t be cured, but also kill people. Sadly enough in the adult film world it almost seems a matter of when, more than if. So all of this can be prevented with simple condom use.

What about people who don’t like condom use in their porn? It’s true, there seems to be a large “taboo” contingency that prefers skin on skin with no latex in-between. I may possibly be one of them. But obviously it goes beyond personal interests, tastes, perversions and fetishes when we’re talking about safety and health. Especially from an industry thats trying to be as open and transparent to the federal government as needed and possible.

Looking forward into the future one can almost imagine non-condom porn videos becoming their own niche. Sold for a higher price and largely transformed into a collectors item and relegated to be referred to as “from the good ol’ days.”

As an aside, since these talks have really only begun, no change is expected to be set in place for at least 2 years.

So who could blame Vivid on wanting a piece of the action?

Word around town is that Vivid founder and co-chairman Steven Hirsch has once again jumped at the chance to catch lightning in a bottle by sending Mayer a letter, offering him a chance to write and possibly direct an adult film. Say what?? I know!!

But this didn’t come out of left field. In true John Mayer spirit, he is quoted (in the very same Playboy article that got him in all that N-word trouble we’ve heard so much about) as saying that his “biggest dream is to write pornography.” Enter Hirsch, arguably the mayor of pornodome, population = everybody.

Don’t misread this article as being authored by someone who’s naive. I know he’s not going to do it. OF course he’s not going to do it. I was excited as hell at the prospect of Conan O’Brien doing a porn but I certainly didn’t believe it would ever happen. Don’t you just wish we’d get that kind of celebrity again though? One who just doesn’t give a fuck? Someone who’s too big to fall? So they could go on doing whatever the fuck they wanted? It would have to be a George Clooney meets Bono meets Screech from “Saved by the Bell.” (Yeah I know his real name, but I don’t want to have to put it in bold).

Rock on Vivid. It’s all a numbers game. Keep a healthy stack of those offer letters handy.

Looks as if Tommy should be thanking his trademark leathers for saving his life and leg. In an amazing show of luck, Tommy suffered from cuts and bruises but NO broken bones. Miraculously his boots kept the semi truck from obliterating his calf, shin and ankle.

Gunn has been released from the hospital but is still going through physical therapy. His calf was twice its normal size but thankfully the swelling has since gone down. That sentence almost sounded like the back of a XXX DVD.

Gunn was on his way to shoot a scene for the cable vampire series “True Blood” when a motorist in front of him came to a dead stop, forcing Tommy to go sideways in an attempt to miss the car. His bike clipped the back and pole-vaulted him into the next lane, where the semi truck was fast approaching. After all was said and done the truck driver never even stopped.

Nice.

Well I’m glad Tommy made it out ok. He’s resting up and hanging out with Elizabeth Starr. Both performers formally retired from the adult film industry in 2008.

On the other hand, what sucks about 3-D?

Wasting the technology on completely contrived 3-D tricks. “Let me just grab this shovel here and….whoaaa the end is so heavy I need to stick it out in front of me for no apparent reason. Whoaaaaa lookit the neato 3-D!”

I hate that. It’s a mood killer and can easily take me out of the moment in a snap. Luckily film-makers are getting better about it and becoming more interested in using it as a story telling tool rather than a special effect.

Hopefully if 3-D makes it past the “it’s a phase” phase in movies, things will follow suit in adult film.

Case in point: Octopussy 3-D. Now I can’t speak as a reviewer having seen the film, for I have not. I did however check out the trailer, wearing the red & blue’s that bring classics to mind like Creature from the Black Lagoon and House of Wax. And maybe that’s its first problem; using a technology that we associate with older movies, when all the new ones utilize those clear, Ray-Ban looking things. The only 3-D they show are when James “Bone” or the myriad of female fuck leads, throw something notable at the camera. These are ridiculous parlor tricks.

My thought is that Funky Monkey, the production company that made the flick, tried to get this out as soon as possible, since other people have gone on record as wanting to put out the “first 3-D porn!” Quentin Tarrantino spoke those words first in 2007, but you can never tell when that guy is being serious. Hong Kong filmaker Stephen Shiu announced that he would be making “the world’s first pornographic movie in 3D,” a $4 million flick titled “3D Sex and Zen.” But Shiu doesn’t even plan on shooting the film until April.

But my money is on Tinto Brass, director of the historic and often cited “Caligula,” the controversial 1979 film starring Malcolm McDowell as the title character, John Gielgud, Peter O’Toole and Helen Mirren. It is considered to be the first major motion picture to feature eminent film actors in a film containing explicit sex scenes.

Brass plans to begin shooting his remake next month.

Admittedly I am a big fan of “Caligula,” but my loyalty comes from a financial standpoint rather than creative. Regardless of what he does, Brass will throw more money at his film than a tradition porn company would, and every one knows about my longing for more big budget porn. One day all porn cliches will be a thing of the past and most acting performances will not be cringe worthy! Dream with me, won’t you?

The largest percentage polled reported that they watch porn a couple of times a week. When asked which type of media they use, 55% said they actually still watch porn on DVD via their computer, however, 51% reported that they also watch it online for free. Way down the list were cable television channels (20%), DVD on the computer (15%) and pay-to-download online (12%).

Most subjects (48%) said they pick what they are going to watch according to favorite content or style, while 32% said they choose it because of the performer. Further down the list of viewing criteria was purchase price (17%) and favorite production company (4%).

Not surprisingly, over 80% of respondents said they enjoyed watching porn with a partner.
